"How's it Growing?” updates will be a new series within the blog starting with Autumn 2024! I'll share what plants are growing in my plant/laundry/pantry room…otherwise known as the basement.
To start things off here is an idea of how I have my growing space set up. There are three sets of movable grow lights with two on a shelving unit and one on top of a freezer. As well as the grow lights there is a hydroponic garden that can hold up to twenty-nine seedlings. As my love for seed starting grows I'm finding another shelf, grow light and hydroponic garden will be needed for early springtime planting.
So, what's growing now? I just transplanted all the pansy and viola seedlings to decorative containers outside leaving plenty of space for new plants. I have eight geranium seedlings(Pelargonium)potted up now(from cuttings taken in August) and the first flower buds are starting to open. Beside the geraniums are ten of the tiniest Russian sage( Perovskia atriplicifolia) plantlings ever! They will continue to grow all winter with very little care as they thrive in dry, poor soil. In the hydroponic garden I've started Purple Coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea) as well as another Echinacea, “White Swan”. Starting perennials in the fall will give them plenty of time to establish healthy roots and stems. Most of what I'll be growing this winter is for the meadow I've been adding to the last few years.
Finally, after moving the eighteen pots of kale and one tray of green onion plants outside, I have a spot to start a dwarf tomato plant “Tiny Tim”. If these tomato plants thrive and perform this winter ,under grow lights, I'll be starting more in the spring for the kitchen garden. Once the temperature starts to drop to the low 40's I'll be housing the kale in the season extender greenhouse.
I can't wait to share the next “How's it Growing” update in winter of 2025! Do you grow annual and perennial plants indoors during the cold,New England winter? Leave a comment below to keep the discussion going!
