When starting seeds, whether under grow lights, outdoors or on a windowsill, here are some tips for successful germination. Many seeds require a little preperation before being planted in the soil.

Some seeds require cold stratification which is a chilling period for about 6 weeks. Many perennial seeds that have naturally scattered in the garden get this freezing period during the winter. Placing seed packets in the freezer for 6 weeks gives the proper chilling requirement. It's important to read the entire seed packet and note if cold stratification is needed so germination is successful.

Some seeds, such as peas, beans and sweet peas, have a very hard coating. Soaking hard shelled seeds overnight in a bowl of water softens the coat and usually cracks it open. Pay attention to the seeds you will be starting and if the shell appears thick a good overnight soaking would be beneficial.

Lastly, there are seeds that require warmth to germinate. Seeds such as Mexican Sunflower ( Tithonia) and Zinnia should be lightly covered with soil. The warmth of sunlight shining on a covered seed starting tray will speed up the germination process by providing the proper temperature.

Utilizing these tips will aide in the germination of seeds that require a prep before planting. Even with the proper steps taken there are still seeds that have a low germination rate. Germination rate is the percentage of seeds that successfully germinate, meaning they begin to sprout and develop a root and shoot.

A seed packet has an abundance of information such as germination rate, specific planting instructions as well as tips for success. Spend some time reading the information provided to have a bounty of seedlings this spring.
