Dragonflies are one of the best, natural mosquito controls you can have. I am fascinated watching them swarm in the air and feast on gnats, mosquitoes and other small bugs.

Dragonflies can be spotted resting on tall grasses near ponds but you can easily attract them to your own garden.

Offer a shallow tray of water, filled with larger rocks, for them to rest on. I have 2 large planter saucers set in my shade garden. Change the water often so mosquito larvae don't hatch.

Have "perches" available for dragonflies to rest on as they survey their surroundings. I like to put decorative stakes, about 5 feet tall, throughout my kitchen garden. It's in a more open and grassy part of the yard with lots of open air for flying.

Providing native plants for your region attracts small insects which, in turn, attract dragonflies.

It takes a while to develop an abundance of dragonflies but using these few suggestions will definitely help. It's a thrill to observe dragonflies swoop in the evening sunset's rays.
